THE question of late is often posed to me, “Deano, why do you bother railing against these outrageous rate increases that council seeks to impose on our community? Why not just rest easy and let it all pass you by as it is all rather pointless as you are dealing with a deaf-as-a-post council and a lethargic community.”

Well, there is great merit in those sentiments, think I – however, to let it all go by untrammeled would be both irresponsible and foolhardy. Irresponsible because the facts of the matter are well known to me and foolhardy because, unchallenged, these matters manifest themselves to much greater levels.
So I take on the role of the sentinel. I see King John’s flint-eyed tax collectors riding out of the castle accompanied by the men at arms sitting magnificently atop their giant destriers and believe there is a need to warn the serfs and their families of the coming storm where all our grain, that we worked so hard to build up, will be taken from us and we will be left with naught to feed ourselves in the upcoming harsh winter. With adequate and timely warning we may be able to save a few bushels to tide us over and not starve yet again in these dreadful snow covered lands.
And so I feel it necessary to rail and when unheard rail again.
P. Dean,
Cambewarra.
