In the past 10 weeks, 34 cats have been adopted through the Nowra Petbarn adoption program, of which 26 were adult cats and eight were kittens under 12 months of age.
RSPCA Shoalhaven Shelter manager Sharon Johnson is excited about what the future holds for the union between the organisations.
“We tend to pass them adult cats as we find they are the hardest animal to adopt in the shelter, so the priority is adults,” Ms Johnson said.
“We sent them two of our oldest cats, nine and 10 years old, and they were both adopted within two days of arriving at Petbarn.
“The community has really got behind the store. Nowra shelter is hitting 700 adoptions a year. The Shoalhaven is a great community when it comes to adopting animals from rescue, it’s amazing.
“The team at Petbarn are great and they look after them beautifully.”
It is the first time the RSPCA Shoalhaven Shelter has had vacant cages in the cattery for a number of years.
“At one point we went down to a half full cattery. That was since Petbarn Nowra opened.”
Petbarn stores join forces with hundreds of RSPCA shelters across the country. As of May 25, they had re-homed over 10,300 cats nationally.
“It’s a huge partnership,” Ms Johnson said.
“It comes down to the people.
“Sometimes people find shelters confronting and we are a long way out of town. At Petbarn, there is also less choice so it’s not as overwhelming.”
