And while today we have a female mayor, female politicians and a female head of the local university campus, she said the quiet efforts of women in the past had sometimes gone unrecognised.
Speaking at the 2015 Shoalhaven Women’s Conference, Wendy said the work of women on the land was a great example of this.
Raised on a dairy farm near Berry, Wendy’s upbringing encouraged a love of the land from an early age, as well as a commitment to volunteering and contributing in a positive way to the wider community.
“I have always had an understanding of the beauty of the land and the integral role it played for many people’s livelihood,” she said.
This passion has carried over to her current role as President of the Nowra Show Society, after many years of involvement in the organisation.
She said her role as a mother, grandmother, aunty, and mentor has fostered a deep desire for the education, empowerment, betterment, and protection of the young and the young at heart.
Wendy has been awarded many accolades for her wide ranging community service and believes it’s important for everyone to have strong goals and the will to stay motivated.
“Surrounding yourself with positive and like-minded people is vital to achieve success at any level and for any goal,” she said.
“You need to have ‘stickability,’ and most of all, a sense of humour!” she said.
