Any new development on Lord Howe typically moves at a snail's pace – if it happens at all – which is part of the World Heritage island's charm. Bowker Beach House is no exception. Owners Lisa Makiiti and Rod Oxley had the vision for the funky, purpose-built beach house, which sits in native forest opposite the beach, for many years before commissioning architect Craig Pattinson to design it. The house is so discreetly tucked away you wouldn't even know it was there. Makiiti says it reflects a growing demand for stylish, private and luxurious accommodation on one of the world's last unspoilt island paradises.

Catering to just one couple at a time, the beach house is set on the western (read flat) side of Lord Howe Island across from the reef-enclosed lagoon and a mere stroll from the iconic Pinetrees Guesthouse. The house is reached via a meandering timber boardwalk through endemic trees. Everything has been carefully considered: from the handcrafted timber bike racks (bike hire included) and irresistible resort hammocks through to custom board racks housing a pair of McTavish surfboards.
Inside, talented Lord Howe artist Margaret Murray's work can be seen in a striking palm mural in the bedroom. Selected works by Fiona Nicholls, a former island resident, also feature. A Bose sound system, flat screen TV and extensive library take care of the entertainment. Haiku bamboo fans, a funky Tribu dining setting, Molton Brown toiletries, a luxurious deep bath and a handcrafted king-size bed ramp up the luxe factor. The hardest thing will be finding a vacancy.
