THE wild weather the Shoalhaven has experienced over the past few days has put paid to a number of planned events, including Luke ‘Stono’ Stojanovic’s charity bike ride from Nowra to Sydney, raising money for Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit at Liverpool Hospital.

But a planned fundraising event at the Great Southern Hotel in Berry on Wednesday from 6pm will still go ahead.
Luke was a rising freestyle motocross star when a training accident on June 20 2012, left him with a serious brain injury.
After almost a year in hospital and another year of rehab as an outpatient, Luke is still learning how to walk and communicates using sign language with his right hand.
He set himself the task of riding a specialised recumbent pushbike from Nowra to the unit at Liverpool, raising money along the way.
That charity ride was due to start on Wednesday, but had to be postponed due to the weather.
Luke and his support team will be selling raffle tickets and T-shirts and promoting his ride at the Great Southern Hotel in Berry from 6pm.
Another fundraising event for Kiama on Thursday evening will also go ahead and, weather permitting, the cheeky but determined 25-year-old will start his charity ride on Friday morning at Bombo, still determined to complete his aim of riding to Liverpool.
While disappointed his ride wouldn’t start as scheduled, Luke saw it as just another challenge he had to overcome.
“There have many challenges put in front of Luke over the years,” said his obviously proud mother Kim.
“And this is just another one of them.
“I’m sure he will overcome this one as well.”
Despite the ride start being cancelled, a group of family, friends and staff from the rehabilitation unit at Nowra Private Hospital along with Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash and councillors Patricia White and Clive Robertson gathered to farewell him on his journey and wish him well.
“Luke’s very disappointed his ride can’t start and he will come back and complete the two legs from Nowra to Kiama he missed at a later date,” Mrs Stojanovic said.
“With the weather the way it has been it just wasn’t safe or realistic to put Luke out on the road, even though he wanted to.”
An emotional Cr Gash, who has known the Stojanovic family for a long time, described Luke as “her hero”.
“We are all with you on this ride, are so proud of what you are doing and will support you.”
Council has thrown its support behind his efforts, donating $500.
Through various fundraising events, including one recently at the Cooee Hotel at St Georges Basin, Luke has already raised close to $30,000 to help refurbish and buy new equipment for the unit.
He aims to complete his ride by May 1. Readers can support his efforts through the Everyday Hero website www.give.everydayhero.com or Luke’s own website www.lukestono.com.
