Inspired by Detroit Soup, where over $50,000 has been raised by community members for community projects over the past four years, a group of Sanctuary Point young people, with the help of Bay and Basin Community Resources held the second Sanctuary Point Soup.
Since beginning in Chicago in 2007 as Sunday Soup, a worldwide network of people have taken the simple idea of the soup dinner and adapted it to their own local needs.
Community members pay $10 at the door for a simple meal of soup and salad.
They listen to project pitches from community groups and members, ask them questions, then vote for the project they would like the donations to go to.
The winner takes home all the money donated on the night to put towards their project.
The winner on the night was Huskisson Girl Guides, who asked for funds for a printer and ink supplies, as the guide leaders have been using their own home equipment.
The idea was presented by Laura, a Girl Guide, who explained that while they do their own fundraising, all of their funds have had to go to a refit of the hall recently.
The hall was damaged by a fire and during the rebuild certain things didn't meet council’s requirements and had to be torn down and built again.
Consequently, any funds the Guides have raised have had to go into the rebuilding efforts.
The majority of young women who attend Guides are also from the Sanctuary Point area so the winnings will impact on the Sanctuary Point community.
Approximately $350 was raised on the night.
