This provides a vital boost for the local economy, creating jobs for local workers of all ages and ensuring small business operators are able to survive some of the quieter times ahead.
And while tourists come here to enjoy the region’s beaches and bush, the lasting impression that will stay with the visitors is the reception they get from the region’s residents.
This has always been outstanding, generating plenty of positive comments about the warmth and generosity of local residents and business people.
The fact is that we are all ambassadors for this area, particularly at busy times when the roads are congested and the streets are crowded, making it difficult to park in our usual spot.
At this time of year, patience is not just a virtue for the impressions we help form, but also for saving lives.
Outsiders on unfamiliar roads will travel slower than us; becoming impatient and overtaking when it’s not safe, or simply driving aggressively, won’t help anyone – it will just put lives at risk.
Our part of the world is beautiful; it’s why we choose to live here. Sharing it a couple of times of the year with those less fortunate than ourselves who are crammed into cities is not too much of a burden. Making them feel welcome should come naturally.
The attitudes we adopt, the patience we find, and the smiles we show, can convince visitors to the area, and possibly provide the financial input vital in securing work for one of our family members.
It is a responsibility most people in their region have shouldered well before, and they will undoubtedly rise to the occasion again.
