Pretty much all the trucks I have encountered have been very obliging and professional, while some car drivers have been less considerate. 

As a retired professional driver, I know the benefit of using your gears to assist braking, whether it is an automatic or manual gearbox. It comes down to driving for the conditions, plain and simple.
