The 27-year-old was awarded the player of the match in the Sydney first grade limited overs grand final, after recording an impressive century for his victorious Bankstown Bulldogs.
Wells knock of 109 from 144 balls guided Bankstown to a total of 7/263 from their 50 overs at Caringbah’s Glenn McGrath Oval.
“It’s a huge honour to receive the medal, especially in such an important match, “ Wells said.
“The one day league is an important competition, so to receive the medal on top of winning the final is pretty special.
“Everyday out in the middle is different and you hope for the best, but on that day in particular I found myself in a good headspace and enjoyed my time in the middle.”
In response, opponents Manly-Warrigah were dismissed for 187, resulting in a 76-run victory for Bankstown.
Wells backed up his strong performance with the willow by taking a catch and effecting a run-out.
The runs keep coming for Wells who made an unbeaten 190 against his former club St George Cricket Club in the Sydney grade cricket quarter final.
“We batted first in the quarter-final and sort of batted them out of the game,” Wells said.
“I was really happy with my score, as it is my highest first grade cricket score to date.
“We will now play Easts in the semi-final, who we got the better of in the last round of the 50 over regular season.
“It’s always a close game between the sides and they will be boosted by the return of a couple of NSW players to their line-up.
“But we are going in confidently, after fighting back to beat St George at the weekend.
“We looked dead and buried but one wicket changed the game and we took nine wickets for just 35 runs as St George fell just short of our total.
“The whole team is riding high on confidence and as a batsman, I’m feeding off that.”
On the back of this innings, Wells becomes the first player since Usman Khawaja in 2007/08 to score five centuries in a season and the 21st player in history to score five or more first grade hundreds in a season.
Wells now leads the 2014/15 first grade run aggregate with 1196 runs and an average of 117, which is 10th on the list of most runs scored in a season, with potential two further games remaining.
Wells is also just 94 runs short of a Bankstown club record for most runs in a season set by Kevin Roberts (1290) in the 1993/94 season and he is the fourth Bankstown player to score 1000 runs in a season.
This performance saw his Bankstown team cruise into the semi-final, where they will play Eastern Suburbs at Bankstown Memorial Oval this weekend.
