Mr Pigg said he didn’t believe the morale in the organisation was a problem, despite staff claims it was at an all-time low and the organisation was a haven for bullying and intimidation.
“There are grievance procedures in place and they are covered under the industry awards to which staff work,” he said.
“Staff can lodge grievances through the Human Resources area.
“The HR area is independent of all the group functional areas. They bring that independence to it.
“They make sure people’s grievances are investigated and looked at fairly and employees are given procedure fairness to raise it.
“If it’s a legitimate issue to be raised with work colleagues or management, it is addressed in a proper way.”
He said issues could also be raised by the union.
“But we haven’t had much of that over the past 12-month period.
“We have over 800 staff in the organisation and you are always going to have somebody aggrieved somewhere down the track.
“But the number of issues unions have raised in the past 12 months have been pretty minimal.”
Despite these claims, council did receive the dubious honour from the Development and Environmental Professionals’ Association (DEPA) of having the worst human resources in local government, for which it was awarded the Golden Turd for 2014.
