The relay will start in Sydney on Sunday, coinciding with International Women’s Day and will travel throughout NSW over a six-month period.
The relay will pass through the Shoalhaven on Thursday, April 2, with local officers taking part in the run and holding the Shoalhaven Women in Policing Expo at the Nowra Showground, celebrating compassion, courage and strength.
Shoalhaven Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Sue Charman-Horton said expo entry was free and encouraged the local community to cheer on the relay runners.
“It’s a chance for the community to join us in celebrating 100 years of women in policing,” she said.
“We can also acknowledge those early women who broke down the barriers and were among the first female officers in the state.
“They were the pioneers who laid the foundation for today’s female officers.
“In the modern force female officers can and do so many things, undertaking a variety of jobs and roles.
“There are so many opportunities for women today but we do so with the support of our male colleagues.
“We all work together to create the best force we can.”
The community event, to be held from 10am to 2pm, will showcase the history as well as the past and present achievements of women in the NSW Police Force.
A variety of NSW Police units will be on display, including the Dog Squad, Mounted Police, Highway Patrol, weapons trainers and Forensic Services Group.
“There will be lots of opportunities to talk to your local police and seek information about recruitment, plus activities for all the family,” Inspector Charman-Horton said.
The day will also include displays by other emergency services including NSW Ambulance, NSW Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service.
