Former students Joan Good (Lumsden), Audrey Lidbetter (Boxsell), Kay Fraser (Priddle), Marie Newing (McLellan), Margaret Heddles (Lumsden), Elaine Brown (Walker), Edith Faulks (Anderson), Ron Walker and Ruth Brack (Wheatley) were just a few of the many people who learnt within the walls of the school.
Ms Heddles remembered a time when she and her friends would spend hours in the rainforest that backed onto the school.
“I remember the carefree days, the kindly teachers and there were plenty of outdoor activities,” she said.
“The pupils belonged to the Gould League and could identify all of the featured wildlife that was so prolific in the rainforest playground.
“We learnt to creep up, ever so quietly, to observe the antics of the lyrebirds around their mound nests.”
Many of the students had generations of family members who were also taught at the school.
Marie Newing (McLellan) said her mother – pictured in 1913 – attended the same school.
“There are many others here today with parents or relations in this photo too,” she said.
“A lot of us would walk to school.
“It was one of those times where everyone knew everyone and we would spend a lot of time together both at school and outside school hours.”
Ms Newing said the main school building where a lot of the classes were held is now kept in Kangaroo Valley.
“The rest of the classes were taught in demountables,” she said.
“We spent a lot of time outdoors playing games like
tennis.”
Edith Faulks (Anderson) loved to play tennis at school. She has kept the original tennis racquet she played with at Beaumont Public School when she was a student around 70 years ago.
“I was the last student to play with this original racquet,” she said.
“It’s nice to catch up with everyone and think back to those times.”
and Edith Faulks (Anderson) and Ron Walker recently had a 70th school reunion at Cambewarra Lookout.
