Julie Danser’s son was 15 when his life was shattered because of ice.
Her son’s battle continues today and Mrs Danser wants to help other people facing a similar fight.
She has organised a Mental Health in March ice information and awareness fundraiser.
The event will be held on Saturday, March 7 at the St Georges Basin Country Club from 6.30pm to 11pm.
She hopes to raise funds for a rehabilitation facility in the Bay and Basin area.
“There is nothing like this [rehabilitation facility] out here,” she said.
Guest speakers at the March 7 event includes people from a drug/alcohol/dementia group, a representative from South Coast Corrective Services and local politicians.
Cost is $25 per person which includes entertainment by Gordon Navara and the Fuse, light snacks, raffles, lucky door prizes and auctions.
Tickets are available at the country club.
“What I want to tell people is no matter what – the money will stay in the community and do some good,” she said.
The Jervis Bay Lions Club will hold the account for the funds raised on the night.
Mrs Danser said the funds could be used for education programs.
She said educating people about the dangers of ice, even if it meant people seeing shocking things, was the key.
Meanwhile, her son has had some ups and downs and she will never give up on him.
“Sometimes I see a glimmer of hope in his eyes,” she said.
Mrs Danser’s son, before his ice addiction, was a natural sportsperson who had loads of potential.
However, now he not only struggles with his addiction, he also suffers from depression.
