IN reply to Dr Anthony’s letter ‘In Defence of vaccination’ (SCR, February 23) I would like to offer another opinion.

I am not anti-vaccine so I started my horses on the course in August 2013 but held off my horses’ third boosters as four close friends horses reacted badly in the 10 days leading up to my due date.
I said I wanted to look into it and I did.
My reading of the information was that it was like a human tetanus shot – once every 10 years but if it has been five years or more and you cut your hand pulling off a horse shoe better give you a booster.
Somehow that became one shot – booster at 21 days then boosted every six months. So four shots in first year on a register and if you miss a booster, you have to start all over again, all with an unregistered drug. Our horses are the trial.
I have written to many people about this to ask how this happened – the APVMA, the Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce (his offices covers the APVMA), the discoverer of the vaccine CSIRO Scientist Dr Deb Middleton and many more.
I have spoken to the minister’s office as I had written to ask for clarification about who and on what data this regime was based and they were helpful and are looking into it and will get back to me.
I have also spoken to doctors and immunologists and Dr Middleton’s regime is sound and should be adhered to for horses in Hendra areas but the constant bombardment of an animal’s immune system every six months is over the top and off label if you read permit # 14876 (for horses vaccinated after August 2014).
