The conversation between Shannon Turnbull and Mr Hargrave took place between 10.30pm and 10.45pm on October 29.
There had earlier been discussions between them about Mr Turnbull making a hydraulic tipper trailer for the wood cutting business operated by Mr Hargrave.
Mr Turnbull made a phone call about 8pm on October 29 and asked Mr Hargrave whether he still wanted the trailer.
His responses was: “One hundred per cent. I will call you back soon.”
When they had their later discussion, they talked about details of the trailer and how much Mr Turnbull wanted for the work.
“It was around this time that I heard what sounded like a door slam shut,” Mr Turnbull said.
“The noise sounded in the background, but close to the phone.”
Mr Turnbull described the sound as being like someone shutting a kitchen cupboard or door.
He kept talking on the phone after the noise, but there was no response.
“There was no reply. It was pretty quiet for 20 to 30 seconds,” Mr Turnbull said.
He then heard a woman screaming close to the phone.
Mr Turnbull gave his evidence in Albury Local Court on the third day of a committal hearing involving Campbell Hart, 29, who has been charged with murder.
Mr Hargrave, 32, was fatally shot near the left temple in his Vickers Road home.
There has been previous evidence about Hart being paranoid from the use of the drug ice.
