I have close family members in the ADF and some who are veterans. They tell me that big numbers of their colleagues voted against the Queensland Liberals in the recent state election to not only censure the Newman government but principally to send a message to the Abbott government in Canberra to solidly register their deep dissatisfaction over how they and their families are being treated.
Governments tend to take the defence community for granted. In Queensland at least a line was drawn in the sand.
In Townsville, a regional seat with a heavy concentration of current and retired military people, the entire three Liberal seats fell to Labor.
The ALP also took two other Liberal seats with significant defence populations, including the Premier’s own seat.
The sleeping tiger appears to be stirring and politicians better look out.
If our local service families follow the example of their Queensland colleagues and decide to send a message to Canberra on March 28 our local MPs will be in deep strife.
The message is clear: our defence people deserve our respect and support and should not be victimised by the bean counters of government.
