The visitors won the toss and elected to bat and try to put a big total on Berry.
But things turned pear-shaped very quickly as Ty Cherry and Chris McCarron ripped through the top order.
Openers Adam Ison (2) and Ben Lahene (0) along with first drop Kurt Quinlan were all dismissed with the score at two runs.
McCarron claimed his third for the innings when he dismissed Daniel Bryant for 6, leaving Nowra teetering at 4/17.
A determined 35 no from 123 balls from Lewis O’Brien and 16 from 45 balls from Sam Watts ensured Nowra saw out the day’s play.
Nowra closed out the day at 8/78, with plenty still to do next week.
Berry’s bowling attack proved why they are the benchmark in the competition, through consistent pressure and tight bowling.
McCarron ended the day at 4/28 from his 18 overs, which included five maidens.
Cherry was economical for his 1/20 from 13 overs, while Joel Gray (2/12) and William Moffatt (1/8) were also among the wickets.
Allen Sullivan was everywhere in the field, claiming two catches on the day.
Play ended early after just 50 overs to wet conditions at the Berry Sporting Complex.
