One of the occupants of the home, on the Princes Highway near the pedestrian crossing, was asleep in the bedroom when a Toyota Corolla smashed through the metal front yard fence, before colliding with the side of the house.

The property’s owner George Mackenzie said as a result of the impact the entire house shifted by about 20 centimetres from its foundations.

“It’s lucky the home is so old its structure was made of hardwood, otherwise I’m certain the car would have gone straight through the bedroom wall where my son’s partner was sleeping,” he said.

“It’s also an asbestos home, so it has been deemed unliveable and will have to be torn down.”

Mr Mackenzie said he was shocked by the amount of damage the small car made.

“The floor inside the house has split and the bath has been shifted, everything has moved,” he said.

Mr Mackenzie said the owner of the car was a neighbour from across the road who lost control of his vehicle, crashing into his own garage, before putting the car into reverse and careering across four lanes of highway.

“What amazes me more is he still had his record collection on the roof of his car from running into his garage, right up to when he hit the house.”
