For a baby who was in no particular hurry to enter the world, Aaron Shahi made up for his tardiness with a series of firsts.

He was the first baby to be born in a NSW public hospital in 2015, the first baby born to his parents, and with a name like Aaron the alphabet is stacked in his favour for a lifetime of first selection.

But Aaron's father Bijay Shahi said the possibility that his son might be the first baby of the year was far from his mind as his wife Nanuka endured a long labour.

"My wife had a very long labour, more than one day, and I just wanted to get rid of that and get the baby out," Mr Shahi said.

The couple originally stumped up to Sutherland Hospital just after midnight on December 31, only to be sent home until the labour advanced.

Over the next 24 hours, baby Aaron's celebrity prospects grew from dim to sensational.

The Shahis returned to the hospital about 11am and the media were alerted to Aaron's arrival shortly after midnight on January 1.

Babies would continue to be born in 2015 and a boy weighing 3330 grams had already done just that.

The Shahis shunned the fireworks to view their son instead.

"When the baby was born and we had the baby in front of us, we were so happy we forgot the whole world," Mr Shahi said.
