The visitors were bowled out for 138 with a deficit of 303 from the first innings just before tea when New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum quickly enforced the follow-on.
The tourists, who only batted 42.2 overs, initially fell victim to good bowling, but the middle order and tail put no price on their wicket and were guilty of trying to bat like McCullum.
Earlier New Zealand added just 12 runs to their overnight score, slipping from 429-7 to be all out for 441.
But it was a blessing in disguise with the Black Caps quicks getting far more out of the Hagley Oval wicket than their opposition.
Trent Boult took the first three before lunch including the world's top ranked batsman Kumar Sangakkara.
A small partnership then developed on either side of the lunch break between Lahiru Thirimanne (24) and captain Angelo Mathews (50) but they were the best of a bad bunch as even Mathews gave his wicket away, wofting at a ball to deep point.
Neil Wagner picked Mathews up on his way to three wickets while Tim Southee and Jimmy Neesham grabbed two each.
