Detectives are investigating the incident in which the man suffered a gunshot wound to the lower leg at Lyrebird Sports Park, off Jervis Street around 11pm.
Police said they were following up information provided by the victim and assured the public it was a not a random incident and there was not “a wild shooter running round the area”.
Emergency services were called to the popular Nowra sporting complex around 11pm where they found a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.
He was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives from Shoalhaven Local Area Command established a crime scene at the park and started an investigation.
General duties officers and detectives spent Wednesday morning combing the surrounding playing fields, conducting a number of line searches trying to find evidence, including a bullet casing.
Forensic officers searched and photographed the area, even enlisting a cherry picker from Endeavour Energy to allow an aerial photograph of the scene to be taken.
Police said the victim, who is known to officers, underwent surgery to remove the bullet, which ballistics are now examining.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, may have heard something or has information that may assist police, is urged to come forward.
