GILMORE MP Ann Sudmalis is facing a furious social media backlash after posting on Facebook her open letter to ABC managing director Mark Scott condemning the closure of the broadcaster’s Nowra office on Monday night.
The post has attracted more than 600 comments, most of which flail Mrs Sudmalis for not opposing the budget cuts in the parliament, and accuse her of hypocrisy and shedding crocodile tears.
Mrs Sudmalis wrote the letter to Mr Scott soon after learning of the decision to close the Nowra office but if the intention was to be seen to be fighting for local ABC resources, it appears to have failed spectacularly.
The post was shared 304 times, with individual responses condemning Mrs Sudmalis liked hundreds of times.
Rebma Rules wrote: “You're actually kidding with this, right? Talk to the guy who runs your party and is responsible for the ridiculous budget, not the guy who is being forced to make the cuts. Honestly, this would be hilarious if it weren't the dumbest frigging logic ever”
And from Max McLean: “That's the way, Ann. Bully and blame Mark Scott after your party's lied to the Australian people and ripped the guts out of our public broadcaster. Shame on you and your thug mates. Read the comments, Ann; that's Australia's open letter to you.”
Perhaps alarmingly, from Patrick Hugh McDonald: “As a young voter in the Gilmore electorate, I feel disgusted that you would send such a letter. Why not take the time out to write to the actual source of the problem, your party's leaders.
“Maybe if you bothered to try and convince them that maybe cutting the ABC and SBS finances was a bad idea then the Nowra station wouldn’t need to close.
“Sincerely,
“Someone who will never vote for you in your electorate, unless you start using your common sense.”
