Geotechnical investigations, which involve the drilling of 13 boreholes, started on Tuesday.
The test holes will be drilled about 14 metres from the existing bridge supports and provide important information about conditions under the river bed for the design of future foundations.
The boreholes will be drilled by a truck-mounted drilling rig on a barge on weekdays from 7am to 6pm and on some Saturdays if required between 8am and 5.30pm.
The barge will include a punt which will be used to transport personnel and equipment.
No traffic changes will be needed on the bridge while the work is carried out.
Investigations are expected to finish in early 2015 and no work will take place during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The new bridge will be built immediately west and as close as possible to the northbound concrete bridge.
Locals can still have a say on the future of the old Nowra Bridge.
Feedback and submissions will be accepted until Friday, December 19.
