The damage bill from Thursday night’s arson attack at the Quest building in Nowra’s CBD is estimated at more than $10,000.
Just before 9pm firefighters attended a the underground car park in the building where bags of insulation had been lit. Before it was extinguished the fire damaged about 90 bags of insulation and melted light fittings and plumbing.
Building site manager Richard Stamp said it was the worst case of vandalism he had seen in his building career working around Australia.
“A bit of graffiti on walls and some tools being stolen is one thing but trying to burn down the building takes it to another level,” he said.
“Insulation is not easy to burn so whoever did this must have used an accelerant or had a decent fire going in here to get some heat into the insulation.
“It’s going to cost us money, but it will also cost us time to get this cleaned up and to order in more insulation.
“The guys on the job are not happy, they’d like to get hold of however did this.”
Mr Stamp said the company would be beefing up the security on the site.
Thursday night’s arson attack follows thefts and vandalism on the site the previous week.
