INTRUDERS deliberately lit insulation batts on fire at a building site in the Nowra CBD on Thursday night.
A local family called in a blaze at the multistorey apartment development on the corner of Plunkett and Kinghorne streets around 8.57pm.
Two fire trucks arrived on scene. Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Mark Kroon said it took some time for firefighters to put out the blaze.
"There were a number of bales of insulation, which made it difficult to put out the fire," he said.
"Some of the water piping inside the building was damaged."
Fencing surrounding the worksite on Plunkett Street had been knocked down.
The Jackson family were driving past the Quest building when young Breanna Jackson told her parents she just was a fire inside the building.
Lisa Jackson said they went back for a closer look and her husband Steve phoned Triple 0 while she ran over to tell the police.
“We had seen a teenager walking very quickly away from the building up Kinghorn Street and we passed that onto the police.
“We waited for the fire service to turn up, about a minute before the fire fighters arrived the security guard turned up and let them in,” she said.
The fire was extinguished around 10pm.
