It’s not the lion, tin man or the scarecrow, nor the witch and not even Dorothy.
Although all the performers have been impressive it is the smallest cast member with the fewest lines that has won the hearts of audiences.
Tilly the eight-year-old shitzu Maltese cross from Cambewarra plays the part of Toto and while working with children and animals is said to be a challenge best avoided, the cast and crew have loved sharing the stage with their furry friend.
Tilly’s fellow cast member and owner, 15-year-old Rahni Urquhart, wanted to make it clear that Tilly was not drugged for the show.
“People ask if she has been drugged because she’s so still and quiet, but she’s not,” Miss Urquhart said.
“She is just a very placid dog who loves cuddles and people.”
Many local theatre enthusiasts might recognise Tilly, as Toto is not the first character she’s brought to life on stage.
She previously featured in a performance of Annie the musical.
Despite her stage experience Tilly did have a small incident during one show last week.
“She was a bit afraid at one point,” Miss Urquhart said.
“She ran onto stage, took one look at the lion and ran off. Everyone covered it up so it looked like it was part of the show.
“The crowd really love her. Every time she comes on people laugh.”
Miss Urquhart has also been on stage previously in school dance performances and recently in Oklahoma.
“I love being a part of The Wizard of Oz. I used to watch it when I was little. It’s fun to be a part of a show that brings a movie to life,” she said.
The Wizard of Oz is showing at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre until Sunday. For tickets phone 1300 788 503.
