This year's Dutch Design Week is throwing up its share of surprises, with laterally minded projects capturing the attention of the wider design media this week. Perhaps one of the more interesting is an installation at the Design Academy Eindhoven by recent graduate Mickael Wiesengrun, who has collaborated with famed Norwegian chemist and artist Sissel Tolaas to create a series of synthetic scents that pay homage to the academy building's former life as a Philips light bulb factory. The scents – which mimic that of sweat, grease, metal and "hard work" – are presented via a visually elaborate installation of curving, interlocking glass test tubes. The designer uses ultrasonic vibrations to turn liquid chemicals into vapour, which is then released through strategically positioned breaks in the tubes. Tolaas is famed for her various projects mimicking bodily odours and scents. ddw.nl
