Abdulrahman Atteya and five members of his family were arrested at Granville on Friday afternoon when police responded to a report from the day before that Mr Atteya had punched his girlfriend in the face and head, pinned her against a wall and threatened to kill her.

When they arrived at Mr Atteya's house and tried to arrest him, police allege he kicked one constable in the knee and punched another in the eye, drawing blood, while violently swinging his arms to avoid being handcuffed.

The 21-year-old was then Tasered by a sergeant as his family allegedly tried to push police out of the way.

Three other family members faced various charges relating to the affray but were granted bail.

In Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, five members of Mr Atteya's family, two of whom were named in court documents as interfering with his arrest, watched as he appeared via video link. They brought with them a packet of documents, including a video of the brawl, which they provided to magistrate Malcolm Macpherson through their legal aid solicitor.

When the video was played to Mr Macpherson and prosecutor Janet Winn from a phone at the front of the court, screaming and an approaching siren could be heard before the clip abruptly ended after about a minute and a half.

"This is quite a messy situation which has, in my submission, quickly escalated," Ms Winn said, submitting Mr Atteya should not be granted bail because he was already on bail for another case of assaulting police.

"I think your honour can see from the AVL [video link] that he is not a small man."

But legal aid solicitor Will Tuckey questioned whether police had used reasonable force in subduing Mr Atteya, suggesting the video made it difficult to rely on the police fact sheet as being completely true.

"At the time that Mr Atteya was said to be violently swinging his arms, he was on his knees, with three or four officers around him, holding parts of him, as a female officer kneed him in the ribs," Mr Tuckey said.

"As this is happening, the sergeant walks up behind Mr Atteya and fires the Taser into his back."

In granting Mr Atteya bail, Mr Macpherson acknowledged the role Mr Atteya's family played in the situation escalating.

"It's very difficult this one, may I say," Mr Macpherson said. "What makes it worse, and not entirely Mr Atteya's fault, is when the whole family gets involved and there's screaming.

"It's most unedifying for all involved. He and the family, it's like World War III, may I say."

Mr Atteya was granted conditional bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
