Sasha Grishin applauds Gerard Vaughan's appointment to National Gallery of Australia

I spoke to Gerard Vaughan in July 2012, shortly after he announced his retirement from the directorship of National Gallery of Victoria after 13 years at the helm, and asked him why he had decided to go. He spoke about many things: highlights, with great exhibitions which drew record huge crowds; the new gallery building with its awkward spaces at Federation Square and the architectural revamp of the mother ship gallery in St Kilda Road; fund-raising and crippling budget cuts; and some historically significant  acquisitions.
