Local resident Kirsten Hodges said traffic in the area was very heavy and very fast, and she was horrified when a senior resident was run over there in August.
“Kerry Street leads to the street for the local St Georges Basin Country Club in one direction and a line of shops and a medical centre in the other,” she said.
“Paradise Beach Road – Sanctuary Point’s main thoroughfare – has the main shopping centre and a school along it.”
She was concerned that if nothing is done at the intersection it would not be long before another serious accident involving a pedestrian occurs there.
“There are many older people in Sanctuary Point who are not so fast on their feet or use walkers. As well, there are young mothers with prams who are also vulnerable to speeding traffic.”
Mrs Hodges said there was also a desperate need for a real pedestrian crossing on Paradise Beach Road.
“All we have now is an island refuge, which is barely sufficient considering the amount of traffic the road experiences.
“As well, the only safety sign is a small thing on one side of the road that is almost illegible – for pedestrians and not drivers.
“It says, ‘Pedestrians give way to cars’.”
Mrs Hodges said as the town grows in size, the problem would only get worse.
Shoalhaven City Council road safety officer Kathy Wiseham said there was a Development Control Plan in place for Paradise Beach Road, Kerry Street and Macleans Point Road.
“When funded, the plan will, through kerb blisters and a roundabout at the intersection of Paradise Beach Road and Kerry Street, reduce traffic speed to 45km/h.”
Ms Wiseham said recent work on the St Georges Basin bypass through Wool Road had already taken 4000 vehicles a day out of Sanctuary Point.
