Jets vice-captain Geoff Johnson, still buoyed by the victory, said captain Ben Wellington was the key behind the team’s victory in the Group 7 premiership played at the Collegians Sports Complex on Sunday.
“He was the key to pulling us together. He drove us on all year,” Johnson said.
“The team has great camaraderie and supportive culture. That got us to the final, and hopefully will carry us to the final next season as well.”
As celebrations continued at the Nowra Showground on Monday, Johnson said Wellington, at that moment undergoing surgery for a compound fracture, was “the man”.
“Hats off to him,” he said.
Man-of-the-Match and Jets’ rookie Ryan James was thrilled at the victory.
“It’s the best feeling ever,” James said.
Teammates James Toovey and Matt Rouen said they were over the moon with the victory.
“I’m concussed but happy,” Rouen joked, pointing to a first-grade shiner.
