Six-year-old Lachlan Thoroughgood was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the beginning of August and has since undergone surgery to remove a growth the size of his fist.
A keen runner, Captain Bateman joined the Running for Lachlan team to take part in the Sydney Running Festival on Sunday.
St Michael’s School, where Lachlan is a student, has rallied behind the little boy and his parents Leanne and Nathan, while friend Kelly Nilsen has organised the running team for the Sydney festival.
“I have run for charity before but when I heard about this story I just thought it was a really worthwhile cause to help support a local boy,” Captain Bateman said.
“I knew that with my position at Albatross I could help bring awareness to the cause.”
Captain Bateman spread the word around HMAS Albatross to help raise funds.
“It got a kick along and every bit helps,” he said.
“I knew me struggling to run was nothing compared to the struggles Lachlan has been going through.
“You don’t often hear about the small charities, it’s often the big ones that get the most exposure so I was happy to be part of something that helps such a great cause.”
