He has worked for more than two months with local support services to organise the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Men’s Camp.
The focus is on culture and healing.
Mr Moore said the program aimed to support good mental health, reduce domestic violence and revitalise culture.
“I was running a similar program in Victoria for about five years. I saw a need here and I wanted to share the skills I learnt there with the men of the Shoalhaven,” he said.
“There will be activities including a camp fire, cultural dances, site visits and bush tucker.
“We are targeting men aged over 18. If this is a success we hope to be able to create something for our youth too.”
Mr Moore said if the camp was well received, there may be room to continue the program as an annual or even quarterly event.
“The more often we could hold programs like this, the better because it is about teaching people through repetition so they can teach others,” Mr Moore said.
Habitat Personnel managing director Gerry Moore said there was a large void in leadership for local Aboriginal men and he hopes the program would help teach responsibility and respect.
“It will also be a chance to revitalise our culture through song and dance so we can be proud Aboriginal men and take our rightful place in this community as leaders,” he said.
The free event at Illaroo Farm will run from Friday, October 10 to Sunday, October 12.
