Wayne and Joanne Stewart’s Housing Department home in Sampson Crescent was destroyed in a fire on August 12.
Uninsured, the family literally escaped the fire with the clothes they were wearing.
The fund-raising evening at the Bomaderry RSL Club on Saturday evening exceeded organisers’ expectations.
James Stewart, of Walsh’s Mitre 10 in Nowra, who helped organise the benefit, thanked the community for its support.
“From the people who attended Saturday night’s function, to those who donated prizes or auctions items, local businesses who backed the event, we can’t thank you enough,” he said.
“We raised $4632 on the night. In-store donations raised $540 and with some other fund-raising we will top the $6500 mark, which is incredible.
“I thought we could raise $2500 and maybe even stretch it to $5000.
“We knew we wouldn’t raise tens of thousands, we didn’t set up the evening for that, but this is fantastic.
“And we all had lots of fun.”
A darts night the previous evening, with 28 entrants, raised $1000.
The community also rallied to help furnish the Stewarts’ new department home.
It has been a tough time for the family. As well as losing their home in a fire, the couple’s daughter was recently in intensive care after an operation and now the family car is also having mechanical problems.
