Almost a decade ago, the couple, who live at Coastal Waters Retirement Village in Worrowing Heights, bought a pair of Segways.
The two are regularly seen zipping about the village doing errands and visiting friends on the convenient two-wheeled machines.
Formerly from Canberra, the O’Boyles moved to the area in November last year.
Mr O’Boyle explained their introduction to the novel vehicle.
“We first used one in Taupo, New Zealand and fell in love,” he said.
Back home, he tracked one down close by for sale on ebay.
“I went to buy it and they had two, so we got two,” he said.
“It’s just for fun, to get out and about. The grandkids love playing on it.”
The response they get is positive, with people often stopping to ask them about the Segways.
“You’ve got no idea,” Mr O’Boyle laughed.
“Everyone wants them.”
Funnily enough, the O’Boyles said it was men who were most often nervous about the Segway, while women and children took to it with enthusiasm.
They have also recently returned from a trip to Europe, where they said travel via Segway was all the rage.
“Even the police use them,” Mrs O’Boyle said.
When not in use, the compact scooters live in the O’Boyles’ garage, where they are plugged in to charge for the next outing.
