Nowra Torchbearers support Nowra Legacy Group, which has 540 widows and 10 juniors in their care, who have suffered through death of a serving family member.
Torchbearers for Legacy was formed in 1946 as a result of rapidly increasing enrolments of widows and children after World War II.
Legacy called a meeting in Sydney which was attended by women who had held various positions during the war and worked in voluntary capacities.
These workers were integrated into one group and their various skills were put to use to raise funds for Legacy.
As the torch is the symbol of Legacy, they became known as Torchbearers for Legacy.
The voluntary group of men and women raise funds for Legacy, with Torchbearers for Legacy also assisting junior legatees by providing the Beryl McFadyen Scholarships for post-graduate study, which was established in 1974 in recognition of the outstanding services of Beryl McFadyen, a past president of Torchbearers for 29 years.
