When we heard about the Stewarts, we were concerned that their difficulties had been overlooked. We thank the anonymous reader for making us aware of their situation. Some asking around by journalist Robert Crawford revealed steps were being taken to help the Stewarts, with several businesses coming to their assistance with housing and furniture.
We discovered that a benefit night is being organised so the Stewarts, who were uninsured, can be helped with the small things established households take for granted.
Once again, the generosity of local people was made evident – that unique capacity we have in the Shoalhaven to lend a hand when it’s needed. And in the Stewarts’ case, that hand is most definitely needed, especially given Wayne’s serious health issues.
That willingness to give will be remembered – and celebrated – on September 10, when local fund-raising champion Scott Morrison is farewelled at Nowra City Church. The funeral will be a bright affair, in keeping with Scott’s legendary Christmas lights, which raised an incredible $60,000 for the children’s ward at Shoalhaven Hospital.
Our part of the world might not be the wealthiest in Australia but our sense of fair play and generosity makes our community one of the richest.
