Having to use busy Illaroo Road, he knows only too well that many motorists ignore the speed limit, endangering themselves and others. His call for police patrols and speed traps comes after years of seeing cars travelling too fast along a suburban street.
Prompted by the Register’s coverage of recent terrible accidents, he thought it was time to come forward and say, “Enough is enough.”
As police clamp down on reckless driving in the Shoalhaven – recognised as a high-risk area for crashes – they would do well to use Mr Holland’s observations.
Police would also benefit by listening to the residents of Sanctuary Point who have seen more than their fair share of fatalities in suburban streets – many the result of high-speed hooning.
It’s important residents speak up while this crackdown is on, so areas that are trouble spots are targeted.
So, if you know of an area or road that sees motorists driving at excessive speeds or putting people at risk in other ways, let the police know – and let us know here at the Register.
Like you, we are deeply saddened by the waste of life that occurs on our roads because of careless or aggressive driving. And, also like you, we want to bring our road toll down. We don’t buy the argument that speed cameras, radar traps and extra highway patrols are solely about revenue raising.
We believe enforcement of rules designed to keep us safe and avoid tragedy and heartbreak is a good thing. And we certainly support the police in their efforts to get motorists to drive safely and responsibly.
