HORSE racing will be making a return to Nowra, with the Shoalhaven City Turf Club to hold the first meeting on the 2014/15 calendar on Sunday.
It will be the first race day since May and is also the first round of the trainer’s premiership.
Local trainer Robbie Price was the winner of last year’s premiership with 60 points, the winning jockey was Jay Ford with 88 points.
Winona Costin was the winning apprentice jockey with 52 points, while the horse of the year was Courage to Dance, trained by another local, Terry Robinson.
A full list of nominations will not be available until Thursday, but it is likely Price will be back with a number of horses as he begins his title defence.
Shoalhaven City Turf Club has welcomed new race course manager David Sharp for the upcoming season, following the departure of Chris Nation.
Sharp has previously worked in Darwin, Sydney and Kembla Grange and Turf Club CEO Lynn Locke said they are happy to have him on board.
“We are really lucky to have someone with so much experience and he has done a good job so far,” she said.
“He has fitted in pretty well and we’re hoping we can keep him around,” she added.
While the weather certainly hasn’t done the course any favours recently, at this stage the races will go ahead as planned.
Mrs Locke said she is looking forward to the first race of the season and is hoping to see a good crowd come out on Sunday.
There will be seven races, along with live entertainment and a jumping castle for the kids, with gates to open from 11am.
