The Cluff family were just trying to rebuild their lives after Rex Cluff was left a quadriplegic in a car accident in February.
This was while the family was struggling with Rex’s cancer diagnosis and his wife Carol was battling her own health problems.
In fact, Rex and Carol were still at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney where Rex is being treated when their home burned to the ground.
Tragically for Rex, his first trip home to the Shoalhaven was spent not celebrating with family and friends, but viewing the remains of his beloved family home.
But judging by the many messages of support we have received following the news of the fire, there are plenty of people very keen to help in any way they can.
Over the coming days, locals will meet with Rex and Carol’s daughter Allison to see what can be done to help the family.
Among the many messages we received from people offering support were also messages from people who know Rex and Carol.
It’s clear from these messages that the Cluffs were kind and friendly neighbours.
As if losing their home and possessions wasn’t enough, they have also lost their pet of 15 years.
One reader wrote on our Facebook page: “Lovely fellow, our family is sad to hear about his beloved poodle. Until his accident Rex regularly walked past our house with his poodle, with a pocket full of treats for her, and would stop for a chat.”
Rest assured the South Coast Register will keep everyone up to date with ways we can help this family pick up the pieces of their lives.
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the Cluff family.
