I WAS pleased to hear Shelley Hancock on 2ST on Wednesday morning saying that, as a result of “local concerns”, she has arranged with the Transport Minister for seniors to be able to continue using paper tickets instead of Opal cards on NSW trains.

While this solves the problem for local seniors who have no internet access, it does not address the issue for many others in the Shoalhaven.
There is still nowhere in the Shoalhaven selling Opal Cards.
Consequently, the many disadvantaged people and youth in our community without computers or internet, or who don’t have credit cards, will continue to find it very difficult to buy Opal cards, and will be forced to purchase the more expensive daily tickets.
Is it really that hard to organise for Opal cards to be sold at local newsagents?
Or even better, how about setting up a small booth at train stations to sell the tickets, which would also create a few more jobs for locals? Until this issue is solved for everyone, the Opal card is nothing but an inconvenience for a significant part of the Shoalhaven community.
