MH17 and Vladimir Putin: what can Australia do?

The families of 38 Australians and permanent residents have been dragged into the geopolitical brinkmanship of Russia and the West. Vladimir Putin’s unwillingness to accept blame for arming the separatists in eastern Ukraine who shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has only infuriated people in Australia. While Prime Minister Tony Abbott downplays the politics and his government manoeuvres to recover the remains of the missing at the crash site, the question naturally remains: if Australia wanted to get tough with Mr Putin, what are its options?
