Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Nowra and Shoalhaven, as well as police and NSW Ambulance paramedics rushed to the home in Hale Avenue, Nowra shortly after 10am with reports it was on fire.
Fire crews donned breathing apparatus and extinguished a fire but not before it caused extensive damage to the verandah.
Nowra Station Officer Greg Bathurst said it appeared ashes placed on the verandah after being removed from an inside fire had caught alight in the gusty wind conditions.
“The wind ignited the embers which caught fire and spread to the verandah, causing extensive damage,” SO Bathurst said.
“There was also some smoke and water damage to the house.”
The occupants of the home escaped without harm.
