THIS week’s man of the round undeniably goes to club committee member and life member, Mr Les Harris.
Les Harris knows every blade of grass on home ground, Lyrebird Park.
He has been welcoming junior Warriors, opposition teams, parents and supporters there for the last 50 years.
This year, Mr Harris proudly celebrates alongside the Nowra Warriors JRLFC the 50th anniversary of the club into junior rugby league.
First coming involved with the Warriors in 1964 when the club was founded by friend and influence, Jack Aldous, Les has filled many positions including club secretary, Group 7 delegate, team coach, committee member and ground manager. These positions lasted on average over 10 years in each role with Les currently walking the lines at Lyrebird Park every home game as ground manager.
During this time, Les has seen many changes and proud achievements made by the Nowra Warriors juniors.
He remembers high achieving players passing through the ranks such as Bruce McGuire, Michael Crockett, Bobby Morris and Murray Smith.
Nowra Warrior team achievements such as the many premierships played and won, coaching his first u8 team and future country player, Bobby Morris, and his 1969 u9 premiers playing undefeated and not conceding a point throughout the season. Les also saw the progression of the game through the introduction of the three classifications; international, mini and mod league.
There have been ups and downs over the years with numbers dropping due to the development of other sports, but Les has always maintained his involvement and dedication to the game he loves.
Highlights of the past 50 years for les included good friendships, meeting wonderful people, dealing with children, parents/carer’s and sharing his love of rugby league.
When asked how many more years he would like to be involved, Les replied “Until I can’t get there!”
The Nowra Warriors JRLFC congratulate Les on his achievement and sincerely thank him for his contribution to the club.
His quiet, calm, organised manner is appreciated by all who deal with him and his dedication to the Nowra Warrior juniors upholds the true values of the proud Warrior tradition.
