What an incredible final that kept the many spectators on the edge of their seats with no one able to predict the winner till the very last bowl.
The scores seesawed till the eighth end when the scores were all tied at 7-all, from there Gail Kiggins’ team went ahead to lead 17 to 12 on the 15th end. However Wendy Garnett’s team dug deep and scored a five on the 16th end and the scores were all tied at 17-all.
On the 17th end Gail’s team scored one shot then Wendy’s team scored one shot on the 18th end to send the game into an extra end.
On the extra end Wendy’s team was holding one shot when Gail with her second last bowl trailed the jack and was holding three shots and it looked like the game was over.
However Wendy played an on shot and put the jack out of bounds to take the game into another extra end.
On the next end Wendy’s team was holding one shot and everyone was on the edge of their seats when Gail played an incredible draw bowl around the head to put her bowl within a foot of the jack.
Wendy tried to take the shot out but missed to give the game to Greenwell Point by one shot.
It was incredible bowling in the dreadful conditions to even keep their bowls on the green let alone play the shots that they did.
The final score was 19 to Greenwell Point and 18 to Bomaderry.
The players went into the club for the official photos with district president Dorothy Sullivan presenting the runners-up Bev Barker, Shirley Morgan and skip Wendy Garnett from Bomaderry with their cheques.
Then president Dorothy presented the winners Pat Black, Kay Innes and Gail Kiggins from Greenwell Point with their badges and cheque.
Regional representative Meg McClure presented the winners with the regional medallions.
Both skips thanked their teams for the incredible bowls that they played and Greenwell Point president Kim Rudd congratulated her girls on their great game and the runners-up for the spirit that they played the game in.
Bomaderry president Judith Croft also congratulated Greenwell Point on their win and her girls for their incredible display of bowling.
District president Dorothy thanked Bomaderry Bowling Club for hosting the day and for the afternoon tea and also thanked Elaine Preston for umpiring the game.
The quarter finals and semi- finals were set down to be played at St Georges Basin on Tuesday, June 24 in terrible conditions.
In the morning the quarter finals were all played, however, the conditions deteriorated in the afternoon and only a couple of ends of the semi-final were played and it was decided to finish the semi-finals the next day at Bomaderry Bowling Club.
The conditions were slightly better for the semi-finals but deteriorated as the day went on, however, the players braved the conditions.
The semi-final between Gail Kiggins’ team of Pat Black and Kay Innes was played against Meg McClure’s team of Helen Greenfield and Ann Bennett from St Georges Basin.
In this game Gail Kiggins’ team took an early lead with the final score being Greenwell Point 20 to St Georges Basin 11.
The other semi-final was played between Wendy Garnett’s team of Bev Barker and Shirley Morgan from Bomaderry Bowling Club and Debbie Wilson’s team of Judith Croft and Janice Egbers also from Bomaderry Bowling Club.
In this game Debbie Wilson’s team took an early lead and the scores were 11 to Debbie’s team and 7 to Wendy’s team on the 13th end.
Wendy’s team scored four over the next two ends and the scores were all tied up at 11-all.
This was another nail-biter with Debbie’s team scoring two over the next two ends to be 13 to Wendy’s 11.
On the 18th end Wendy’s team scored three shots and Debbie tried to cut it down but couldn’t giving Wendy ‘s team the game 14 to 13 another incredible game which kept us all on the edge of our seats.
Good luck and good bowling to all the teams playing in the Champion of Club Champion Pairs which starts on Monday, June 30 at Warilla Bowling Club.
