The 28-year-old Winston Hills man, known as Andrew Cho, was washed off a rock platform while fishing with three friends at Mermaid Inlet near Little Beecroft Head at 2.20am on December 23 last year.
Police said he was not wearing a life jacket at the time.
DNA and dental records were used as part of the post mortem on the remains to determine it was the missing man.
A Currarong fisherman located bones, washed into a cave on June 13, about 250 metres south of Mermaid Inlet.
Police Rescue and Crime Scene officers used ropes to rappel into the cave the following day and discovered a number of skeletal remains, clothing and the remnants of a blue and white baby wading pool.
Despite an extensive search in the area last December by Port Kembla Water Police, PolAir, the Rescue Helicopter and Lifesaver Helicopter, volunteers from two Marine Rescue NSW vessels and the Nowra-Culburra Surf Club the missing man was not located.
In January this year police divers resumed the search for the missing man, searching rocks shelves in the area, but again failed to find him.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
