UPDATE, 3pm:  Two teams of SES volunteers are removing a large trampoline on the roof of Ekidna Kinda and the property next door at West Nowra.

No children were in danger, but staff took the precaution of barricading a window in case the trampoline became dislodged.

Staff at the centre said the heard a few loud bangs as it bounced across their roof.

The SES has removed a number of trampolines from trees today. Residents are reminded to secure or tether trampolines in high winds.

UPDATE,  2pm: About 600 residents in the southern Shoalhaven are without power on Tuesday afternoon.

Endeavour Energy reports power outages around the Sussex Inlet, Milton and Ulladulla areas.

An Endeavour spokesperson said the extremely strong winds the area was experiencing were playing havoc with the power system.

“As the wind carves its way up the coast we are getting reports of a number of trees being brought down, and in some cases they had brought power lines with them,” the spokesperson said.

“There were reports of high voltage power lines down in River Road, Sussex Inlet, while in Milton a number of large trees have fallen across roads in several locations, making accessing the area difficult.

“There were reports of power lines down in the Wandandian area as well.”

The spokesperson said due to the strength of the wind in the area at the time it was too dangerous to put staff members up ladders or in lift buckets to carry out repairs.

“Due to safety concerns we have to wait for the winds to abate,” the spokesperson said.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting winds of up to 80km/h with peak gusts of 110km/h, to lash the region later Tuesday.

The Nowra town area is experiencing winds between 30km/h up to the high 40s, but gusting up to 78km/h. 

UPDATE, 12.15pm: Police are on their way to Sussex Inlet, where wires are down in River Road. 

Struck by cyclonic-strength winds on Monday evening and early Tuesday morning the Shoalhaven SES crews have answered 12 calls for assistance.

Nowra SES Unit controller Mark Kielly said calls for assistance had been received from a wide area across the city, including Nowra, Worrigee, Sanctuary Point and St Georges Basin.

“We’ve answered a number of calls for trees down and loose roof tiles, but thankfully at this stage we haven’t had anything major reported,” he said.

“We have two crews out conducting clean-ups and repairs.”

About 100 residents in North Nowra and Berry have been affected by a power blackout. 

The highest wind reading was 91km/h at 11pm Monday, while 78km/h was recorded at 1.30am. The gusts seemed to drop by 7am.

According to the bureau, a tropical category one cyclone brings wind gusts over open flat land of 90-125km/h.

By 9am Tuesday wind gusts in Nowra, recorded by the Weatherzone website, were reaching 56km/h from the north west.

On Tuesday Nowra is only heading for a top of 14 degrees.

Further east at Point Perpendicular winds reached 65km/h at 6am Tuesday, and by 9am were gusting at 52km/h.

A severe weather warning is still in place for the South Coast with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting intensifying westerly winds.

A cold front crossed southeast NSW late Monday, and an intense low pressure system west of Tasmania is expected to move east/northeast through Bass Strait.

Gales are expected to become more general and stronger during the day and extend to central parts of the coast Tuesday afternoon.

Locally, winds averaging 65km/h with gusts of 100km/h are expected, but during Tuesday with damaging winds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts to 110km/h to become more general.

Winds on the Alpine Peaks may reach 90km/h with peak gusts to 130km/h with 40cm of snow expected.

A marine wind warning is still in place for the region.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony and keep clear of fallen power lines.
