Initially it was reported the child, who was taken from outside Nowra Public School in Plunkett Street, Nowra, may have been abducted.
It was later revealed the father had taken the six-year-old and was travelling back to Bargo on the Southern Highlands.
Police were given a description of a car involved in the incident and stopped the man’s vehicle in Kangaroo Valley shortly before 10am.
Police said the incident was of a “domestic nature” and no laws had been broken as there were no court orders in place.
The child was reported to be fine although “a little frightened”.
Police continue to make inquiries into the matter.
