That's the message from Shoalhaven Local Area Command Acting Superintendent Paul Condon.
“We will have extra police on local roads over the long weekend and will be targeting the major causes of road trauma, including speeding, alcohol and drug-impaired driving, driver fatigue, not wearing seat belts or helmets and using mobile phones,” he said.
Operation Stay Alert started midnight Thursday and will run until midnight Monday, June 9.
“Police across the state, including the Shoalhaven, will be targeting inappropriate road users,” Superintendent Condon said.
“Double demerit points will also be in operation during this period. We are asking the public to drive to the road rules and conditions when travelling to and from their destinations.
“We are hoping to have a fatality free weekend.
“We have already lost 10 lives in the Shoalhaven LAC in the last 12 months - that’s 10 people who did not arrive home to their families – that’s 10 people too many.
“Please be careful on our roads. Police will be out in force to monitor and detect any dangerous driving practices that place you, or other members of the public at risk.
“We will have extra traffic and highway patrol vehicles working our local area command as part of the operation.
“Remember, every traffic and highway vehicle is a mobile speed detection unit and a mobile drug and alcohol detection unit.”
