Just weeks ago the site was more reminiscent of a bomb site, with large mounds of rubble, during its demolition.
Contractors Zauner Constructions have completed the demolition of the old pool and its surrounds and the rubble has been removed from the site.
The outer perimeter for the pool has been excavated, with the actual positioning of the pool marked.
A drainage layer has put constructed underneath the pool to aid with drainage and create a working platform.
Ag line drainage has been placed below pool level around the perimeter, which will intercept any water coming onto the site and discharge it in the current stormwater system.
The pool profile is taking shape, with depths starting from 1.35m at the shallow end, transitioning to 1.85m level for the remainder of the pool.
A large trench has been put in place at the southern end of the pool which will house a two-metre wide balance tank, which will recover water from the pool’s gutter system and pass it into the filtration system before returning it to the pool.
Another tank is being installed alongside to cater for the splash pad, which has also been carved into shape.
Council’s project manager Gary George said work was progressing well.
“We have finalised the structural design of the shell and our next major step is starting on the pier work to support the new pool structure,” he said.
“That work may take three to four weeks with a large drilling rig on site.
“Once the piers are in place, work can start preparing the underside of the form work and steel reinforcement.
“There has been a lot of work undertaken in recent weeks. We have been lucky with the fine weather which allowed the contractors to progress well.”
The new pool will be nine lanes instead of the previous seven and will include new filtration equipment, heating, a FINA compliant water polo facility and an aquatic water park, including a splash pad.
It is still planned for the new pool to open during the next swim season.
